He served for over 37 years in the US military. He commanded the Iraq troop surge under President Bush; led the United States Central Command (2008-2010), one of the eleven unified combatant units of the Department of Defence.
In this position, he commanded the American military in the Middle East, Egypt, Central Asia and parts of South Asia. Subsequently, he led the International Security Assistance Force from 2010-11, the NATO-led military force in Afghanistan.
